Thanks Chester, this is at least part of the answer. An update for those who come along later; I'm using a Lenovo Thinkpad W520 which has the Renasas USB 3.0 chipset mentioned in the reference FAQ item. I have two of these machings and both exhibited the same issue of showing up in the Device Manager, but not seen by the XDS tools. There were two applicable updates to the USB drivers and both were needed. The Lenovo packages are 8ay210ww "USB Driver Update" and osfl03ww "Registry patch to improve USB device detection on resume from sleep" Teh second once shows as Vista only, but was still needed to get things running on Win 7. That fixed one of the W520s, the other needed the XDS drivers completely removed (by ticking the "delete files" box on the uninstall popup) and reinstalled. Now xdsdfu -e can see the device. The device manage now complains about the XDS110 CMSIS-DAP in other devices, so off to figure that out.
