"without current limiting mechanism the LED may blow up." Yes, the example was for the sake of simplicity. "the LED will always turned on unless the LED or the PORT is damaged" I understand the case, but the example was just for simplicity. The question is, if say the output is tied to ground, can it sink/supply current indifferently, inside the limits? I ask because the datasheet specifies that the maximum current when the output is high is -2mA (supplying) and when is low is 2mA (sinking). However, since it does not say +/-2mA when is low, it makes me think that when the pin is low, it should not supply current.
