The MSP merely connects the pin to ground; it is the job of the power supply to sink or source current in the needed amount. As long as the output transistor's voltage drop would not go below that of the protection diode, this would actually work. But it would not be possible to switch off the LED (switching the output to high would result in more current), so this circuit would not make sense; you could just connect the anode directly to ground.
