Thanks for the answers! Clemens, I had not considered the protection diode + transistor point of view. That makes a lot of sense. old_cow, your answer clarifies my question. I thought of another example that may clarify the issue further. Imagine I connect a capacitor (in series with a resistor) to P1.0 and P1.1, both as output. Then, I set P1.0 high and P1.0 low and the capacitor charges. Next, I set P1.0 low and the capacitor discharges. Current will flow out of P1.1 and into P1.0. Just to make sure I got the right ideia, everything will be fine if the current is kept below the safe threshold? Thanks for all the answers
